INTRODUCTION

RESCUING THE PAST TO CREATE FUTURES

In its 34th edition, Curta Kinoforum returns to a design similar to that of before the pandemic. Last year we already rehearsed the return to the movie theaters, in a hybrid format with digital platforms, and now we are occupying the very special spaces that have accompanied us for years, without losing the possibility of reaching more spectators throughout Brazil. The feeling is even better when we know that our production team will be based at the Cinemateca Brasileira, which has resisted the last four years thanks to its brave employees and friends.

This year’s programming brings many new features and is also full of rescues. The plurality of capture and editing means allowed us to increasingly expand access, reaching more people, but also creating a much more diverse generation to work behind the camera. For over 20 years, the Festival has exhibited indigenous productions developed in pioneering projects such as Video nas Aldeias, in addition to audiovisual production workshops that are present in the program every year. This year, in the focus Matters of Heaven and Earth, authorial indigenous cinema reaches our screens, with film programs by Priscila Tapajowara, Takumã Kuikuro and Olinda Tupinambá. The Horizons program debuts on the schedule, bringing together films that address the young universe and trends for the new generations.

At the same time, we look at the history of cinema and in particular the Brazilian short film, in a series of tributes and with a program that brings together films that dominate cinematographic narrative and were recognized by the Estímulo Award — a promotion that helped to form the generations of 1980s and 1990s of São Paulo filmmakers and to develop the format that has always been a space of resistance in the face of the ups and downs of the fragile Brazilian cultural policy.

The current world in which several worldviews coexist — not always in harmony — and so many voices still need to be heard requires us to be willing to exchange and open to the new. This is the territory we have lived in since the creation of the Festival, also a result of the pulsing scenario of short films from São Paulo in the late 1980s. We invite you to enjoy the encounters that the movie theater and its surroundings offer.

A BOOST TO THE BRAZILIAN AUDIOVISUAL MARKET

The São Paulo International Short Film Festival – Curta Kinoforum celebrates, this year, 34 years of partnership with the Sao Paulo State Department of Culture and the Creative Economy. In 2022, it was awarded R$ 200,000 by ProAC Editais, which aims to promote and disseminate artistic production in all regions of the state, financially supporting cultural projects in the most diverse segments.

The Museum of Image and Sound, located on Europa Avenue, is one of the venues for this festival, which is one of the most important festivals dedicated to short films. More than 3,200 films were submitted between January and April, from different countries.

This support is in line with the mission of promoting a free, plural and innovative cultural policy, establishing actions that encourage interaction between different expressions to transform the cultural industry into a conductor of human and economic development.

Currently, the creative cultural industry corresponds to 3.11% of the Brazilian GDP, a rate higher than the 2.5% of the automotive industry, according to a study by Itaú Cultural. The audiovisual sector alone occupies the fifth position in importance in the Brazilian economy.

The Sao Paulo State Department of Culture and the Creative Economy believes in the potential of the Brazilian audiovisual industry and works tirelessly to recognize, encourage and create even more opportunities for professionals working in the sector.

RENEWING OUR AUDIOVISUAL SUPPORT

For the third consecutive year, Itaú Unibanco supports Curta Kinoforum – São Paulo International Short Film Festival, one of the most traditional events dedicated to this cinematographic format, taking place since 1990 in the city of São Paulo. The support is in line with the constant dialogue between Itaú Cultural (IC) and audiovisual production, an artistic axis present in several of the organization's actions.

This year, part of the special program for the 34th edition of the Festival will be available exclusively on the Itaú Cultural Play streaming platform, between August 24th and September 10th. There will be six short films about indigenous peoples in the country, all of them directed by indigenous filmmakers. The films join more than 190 titles in short film format on display on the platform. Watch them for free on itauculturalplay.com.br.

In other areas of IC in which the audiovisual factor stands out, the program Ocupação  (itaucultural.org.br/ocupacao), in 59 editions, has already honored important filmmakers, such as Eduardo Coutinho, Luiz Sergio Person and Rogério Sganzerla. Escola Itaú Cultural (escola.itaucultural.org.br) offers the course Constellation of the arts: Brazilian cinema – fables about a disputed territory, in order to promote reflections on Brazilian cinema based on its dialogues, contradictions and tensions.

LONG LIVE CURTA KINOFORUM

Spcine celebrates the seventh year of partnership with the São Paulo International Short Film Festival – Curta Kinoforum, which presents its 34th edition. In line with Spcine's values, the Festival supports the Brazilian audiovisual sector and promotes actions focused on cultural and social inclusion. With a diverse curation, Kinoforum brings a programming of new and established Brazilian and international short films.

In addition to the dissemination actions, Spcine Play, a public streaming platform, will have a special shelf in its catalog containing part of the titles presented at the Festival, giving  access to the works for free and from any location.

In addition, focsing on bringing audiovisual talents closer to the job market, Formação Spcine will carry out actions aimed at the development of professionals and students in the sector by hiring two film club agents to monitor the event, a commented session for the Spcine Cineclub and an activity about the spring of short films that will take place as the opening of Crítica Curta, a critique workshop offered by Kinoforum during the festival.

THE SHORTS' RANGE

Sesc develops regular actions in the audiovisual field, approaching it from a broader perspective. The institution's work with cinematographic language involves different film modalities, exhibition formats and enjoyment modes, with the screen occupying different environments and being offered to plural audiences. This arc goes from the traditional room to alternative projections, in spaces of varied uses, including outdoors, fostering multiple cinematographic experiences, not restricted to the dark and fenced enclosure. A wide range of socio-educational actions are linked to this list of exhibitions, including laboratories, workshops and courses. Such a broad understanding of cinema is guided by the quest to expand the representation of ideas, genres, regionalities and narratives.

An integral part of this diversified action, in line with Sesc's scope of action in the sociocultural sphere, the systematic partnership with festivals allows the entity to contribute to organizations that have been committed for decades to the dissemination of the seventh art and, at the same time, increase its own range of options directed to the users of the network of units. In this perspective, the institution has been a partner of Kinoforum – International Short Film Festival since the first editions of the event, in the 1990s. The support is due to the recognition of the festival's ability to present, through annual events, the breadth of short film production in the world, conceiving them as a language with its specificities.

The fact that short films are not very widespread in the commercial circuits means that the joint action of Curta Kinoforum and Sesc partially fills this gap, as it represents an instance of mediation with the public. Given its concise nature and lower cost, the “short film” is open to experimentation with new devices and democratizes the access to the means of production, allowing for a greater diversity of directors. It is not recent the fact that the number of peripheral filmmakers and indigenous directors who use the modality as a means of expression is growing, which favors the emergence of narratives that are different from those already legitimized – therefore, enriching with the understanding of worlds.
